How ICT Helped Education during the pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, everything suddenly changed. Schools were closed, classrooms were empty, and students had to stay at home. Many students felt confused and worried because they did not know how they would continue their studies. Even though schools were closed, education did not stop. It just changed its way of teaching. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) became very important during this time.

In the Philippines, the Department of Education created the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan so students could still learn even during lockdowns. Around the world, UNESCO said that more than 1.6 billion students were affected by school closures. Because of this big problem, schools started using technology to continue teaching.

Apps and platforms like Zoom, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Teams became our new classrooms. Teachers discussed lessons through video calls. Students passed their assignments online and took quizzes on their gadgets. Group activities and class discussions happened in chat boxes instead of inside a real classroom. Even if teachers and students were far from each other, ICT helped them stay connected.

Even with these challenges, ICT helped education continue. Teachers learned how to use new technology, and students became more independent and responsible with their tasks. Because of the pandemic, many schools now use both online and face-to-face learning.

The pandemic taught us that ICT is very important in education. It is not just an extra tool but a necessity. Even when classrooms were closed, learning continued because of technology. ICT became the bridge that kept education alive during one of the most difficult times in history.
